Now that i find myself living on the edge of the Brecon Beacons national park, i have found time to revisit some of the more interesting places that i knew when growing up in the area.
One of my favorite pastimes when growing up, was to visit many of the local castles and monuments in the area.
Due to the areas turbulent past there are many spectacular ancient remains, and well preserved castles.
One of the areas most imposing locations is Carreg Cennen Castle. Perched on top of a limestone precipice, it dominates the adjoining valleys.
Carreg Cennen Castle is near the River Cennen, in the village of Trap, four miles south of Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire. The castle is within the Brecon Beacons National Park, and its location has been described as spectacular, due to its position above a limestone precipice.
Viewed from the South it is both spectacular and picturesque, having been captured on canvas by many including Turner.
Laugharne castle is another well preserved, local 12 century castle.
The castle is located on the estuary of the River Tâf and was originally established in 1116. The castle was once owned by Sir john Parrott reputedly the illegitimate son of Henry VIII.
The present remains of the castle include work from about 1114 to about 1476. Kidwelly castle was used as a location for the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and many other on screen appearances due to its excellent state of preservation.
These are only three of the many castles that dot the landscape in this part of Wales. I have revisited many more, all in a 25 mile radius of home. I may post more in the future. This is an area well worth visiting if you are interested in Castles and beautiful scenery.
