I have managed to be in St Marks square during a heatwave, its about 37C. The only benefit of the heat is that St Marks square is almost deserted and all sensible people are in search of shelter. Only us mad people out in the heat.
St Marks square and its immediate surrounding area is a history buffs dream, with many familiar historic buildings ranging from St Marks Basilica 1379, the Clock Tower 1499. To the left is the long arcade along the north side of the Piazza, the buildings on this side were built in the early 16th century. Standing free in the Piazza, is the Campanile of St Mark's church 1156.
There are way to many interesting buildings and places to visit here, i recommend you visit Venice if you can.
I nearly forgot to mention the Doges Palace. Another impressive, must see as its now a museum with some really interesting items.
If you want to soak up some real atmosphere and a coffee to boot, then you must visit Caffè Florian. This coffee house is situated in the Procuratie Nuove of Piazza San Marco. It was established in 1720, and is the oldest coffee house in continuous operation in Italy. You may have to take out a second mortgage though.
